5 Ways to build your network from scratch

Does the idea of networking stress you out? Sweaty palms, heart racing?

I hear you.

I'm entering what will likely be a pivotal phase in my entrepreneurial journey, which involves rebranding my company and moving to a new country.

This is a giant leap I'm taking, and networking is essential to my career success. But it can be scary and overwhelming to network when unsure of what steps to take.

As a military spouse, I'm accustomed to the challenge of starting over in new places. Meeting new friends or finding a talented hairstylist can take a lot of work! And then there are the sports teams for my girls and a groomer who can handle my shaggy dog. Oh, and I can't forget, I need to know where I can find a good G&T...this list goes on forever.

As I make this new move, I'm reminding myself to breathe.

While "networking" can be scary for many people, it doesn't have to be.

It's intimidating thinking about approaching strangers and asking for help; we fear being an inconvenience or embarrassment—or like we bring nothing to the relationship. But here's a little secret - people want to help other people. It makes us feel good to help others!

Networking can be scary when we don't know where to begin.

If that's you, try these simple tips to connect with the right people and start a new circle of professional relationships.

  1. START WITH WHO YOU KNOW

You'll be surprised at how many contacts you already have, even starting from scratch. Sit down and list all the people you can think of, from your colleagues and clients to friends, neighbors, and college professors. Think of what connections you can make.

Start building your LinkedIn network with people you know, and it will gradually increase over time. Participate by liking and sharing posts and articles and follow industries, influencers, and organizations that interest you. Before you know it, you'll find people are sending invitations to connect with you.

2. COMMIT TO CONNECT

Decide that one of your first goals is to do something positive daily to reach out and build your network. This can range from following up on contacts from meetings, trade fairs, or conferences to checking in with LinkedIn connections or old colleagues and clients.

Watch for professional courses and conferences where you can make new contacts.

3. JOIN YOUR COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY ALUMNI CLUB

Most colleges have alumni clubs, often with national or international reach. Find out if there's a chapter in your town and join in the various club activities. There are various events, from professional speakers to social or sporting events. It's a natural fit for networking, as you're all starting with something in common.

4. JOIN AN INDUSTRY OR PROFESSIONAL GROUP

Most industries have professional associations. Connect with your local group and find out what they have to offer. Chances are they will run learning and development opportunities, lunches and dinners, and maybe a directory.

5. EXPAND YOUR CIRCLE

You might want to make new friends and professional connections if you're new in town. Join a book club or a sports team, sign up to learn ceramics, or find a writing group. Check social media for ex-pat groups who don't just meet online but often organize all sorts of social occasions. Making contacts will make you feel less lonely and can hook you into all kinds of local opportunities.
